Immediate Action Urged on Improvements to End-of-Life Experience for Older People

The Alliance of Age Sector NGOs (The Alliance) is a collective of eight significant NGOs working in the age sector. The member organisations include ourselves in Irish Senior Citizens Parliament along with: Active Retirement Ireland, Age & Opportunity, ALONE, COPE Galway, Irish Hospice Foundation, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland, and Third Age.

In October 2025, The Alliance launched the third edition in the Telling It Like It Is series – Experiences of Older People at End of Life 2025. The report draws on the findings from the National End of Life Survey, as well as the wider evidence-base on older people’s experiences at end of life, to describe critical areas of importance to older people, and their families, who are facing death and bereavement.

A summary of the key findings and recommendations from the report is available here

The report identifies a number of areas that are key to the experience at end of life for older people – Communication, Access to Key People and Timely Help, Care in the Community and Bereavement Support.

Recommendations in the report include the continued call by The Alliance for the establishment of an Independent Commissioner for Ageing and Older People. Specific to the issues older people face at end of life the report recommends training for those interacting with older people to support them in conversations about end-of-life care, access to key supports in the community, greater awareness and access to information and resources that empowers older people as they approach end of life and a call for the National End of Life Survey to be repeated.
